Under the supervision of a Teacher for the Visually Impaired the Braillist assists supporting assigned students. The Braillist may assist teacher with the students’ use of technical devices in the classroom, and instruct others on and about Braille technology, hardware and software.
Associate’s (or higher) degree
60 Semester-Hour credits from an accredited institution
AZ Dept. of Education-approved Academic Assessment Test
Knowledge of transcribing Braille or working with Braille-related technology, including Grade 2 and Nemeth Code
Knowledge of Tactile graphics, material adaptation, scanners, embossers, Duxbury, Text Bridge (or other OCR Software), Scientific notebook, Paper Port, or other file management software
Knowledge of visual and sensory impairment in children and/or adults
Basic computer and word processing skills
Record keeping experience
Verbal & written communication skills in English and a demonstrated ability to read and comprehend written/graphic and oral instructions
Any equivalent combination of experience, training, or education
Braille Transcriber Certificate.
Six months of experience working with vision impaired children
One-year experience transcribing Braille or working with Braille-related technology, including Grade 2 and Nemeth Code
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRE
FBI fingerprint background check (at employee’s expense).
Proof of immunity to rubeola (measles) and rubella (German measles), or proof of MMR immunization
Valid AZ Driver's License required within 10 days of hire.
Reliable mode of personal transportation with evidence of auto insurance policy. Coverage must be valid throughout term of employment.

WCL - Grade 9
$14.80 per hour
1.00 FTE - 8 hours per day
Positions less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for district benefits.
