Exceptional Education Teacher / Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (Effective 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR)
The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) will provide orientation and safe travel skills at the developmentally appropriate level to students with visual impairments. The COMS will effectively manage the learning environment to prepare Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goal driven sessions, help qualified students travel safely within the school/community, evaluate, monitor, and collect data on the students’ performance to advance student achievement. Understand and appreciate diversity. Work collaboratively with a team to plan instruction. Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning. The COMS will provide related services to qualified students with visual impairments that includes classroom orientation, school/community travel options and experiences, white cane techniques, transition, and technology when appropriate.
Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education with coursework specific to visual and sensory impairments
Orientation and Mobility Certification via the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Educational Professionals (ACVREP)
Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Valid Arizona Special Education Teaching Certificate - Visually Impaired Special Education, Birth-Grade 12
Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Orientation and Mobility
Demonstrated success in engaging African American and Latino students
Bilingual (Spanish) endorsement
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRE
Proof of immunity to rubeola (measles) and rubella (German measles), or proof of MMR immunization.
Must hold a current Driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance coverage greater than or equal to the required minimum for car insurance as described under Governing Board Policy: EEB-R-1 Business and Personnel Transportation Services - Transportation by Employees unless other ADA accommodations are made through Risk Management

Location: Exceptional Education Department - Sites Vary
FTE: .60 - 4.5 hours per day
Work Calendar: 9.5 month
Positions less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for district benefits.
Probationary Contracts will be issued for any contingent Certifications, Positions that are 0.6 FTE or less, and certified employees within their first three years with the District.
