Job Description

SUMMARY

Facilitates communication between deaf and hearing impaired (HI) students and their hearing peers, teachers and others through interpreting and transliterating - expressive and sign to voice.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

AZ IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

Demonstrated ability to translate in sign language.

Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation, Signed English, finger spelling and/or other modes of communication with HI students and adults.

Basic knowledge of child development and language development.

Familiarity with the Deaf Culture and cultural diversity.

Verbal & written communication skills in English and a demonstrated ability to read and comprehend written/graphic and oral instructions.

Any combination of experience, training, or education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience working with youth or adults in educational interpreting and/or tutoring.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRE

Proof of immunity to rubeola (measles) and rubella (German measles), or proof of MMR immunization.

Must work under the supervision of an Educational Interpreter. Must have a professional development plan for earning at least 24 clock hours of training in interpreting, per year, that a valid Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certificate is not held, or if an Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) passing score is not attained.

MUST ATTAIN AN ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE AND RID CERTIFICATION OR AN EIPA PASSING SCORE OF 3.5 WITHIN THREE YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT.
